Ascension Parish, Louisiana is one of sixty-four parishes in Louisiana. A parish, in Louisiana, is the equivalent of a county in other states.

The parish had an estimated expenditure for 2008 of $107 million. Fifty-six point five percent of its budget is raised through a sales tax.

To compare Ascension with other Louisiana parishes, see Websites of the Louisiana parishes.

Transparency of the Ascension Parish website

The Good

  • An inspection of the website finds that it does include information about who is on the board of trustees (the governing agency) of the parish.[1]
  • The website includes a form that can be used to request public records.[2]
  • The website includes budgets from 2004-2008.[3]
  • The site posts permit and zoning applications.[4]

The Bad

  • The 2008 budget is in PDF form and is in 332 pages that are not searchable.[5]

Open Records

Parish Commissioners voted to name the chief administrative officer the custodian of public records, meaning that all requests for public records be routed through one person. The reason given for making this policy change is that too much staff time was being taken up by responding to open record requests. [6]
